Chapter Fourteen

They were only yards from the camp, when suddenly Mak found himself surrounded by a group of fierce looking women. They’d silently come out of the jungle and pointed their sharpened staffs at Mak. “Hayla! Tell them to stand down!” He growled in demand.

Glory stopped walking and turned around at Mak’s yell. She was surprised to see the women from camp had cut him off from the group and had him surrounded. While she was proud that the women managed to move so silently, she was also frustrated with herself for not noticing them beforehand. As she led the group, she became lost in thought about Mak and hadn’t paid attention to her surroundings. Dangit, that could have been the lizard guys that snuck up on us! I have to get control of myself and stop constantly thinking about Mak. What is it about that man that is driving me to distraction?

“Hayla! Are you going to let them know that I’m not a threat or are you going to just stand there and let them poke holes in me?” Mak growled louder, causing the women to slowly advance on him. He realized they couldn’t understand him and mistook his frustrated growl as a threat. The feral look in their eyes was starting to make him a little nervous, especially since his mate didn’t seem to be in a hurry to call them off.

Glory tried to hold in her laughter but it came bubbling up at the frustrated look on Mak’s face. “It’s okay, ladies. He’s completely harmless and he’s with us.” Mak glared at her and snarled at her comment about him being completely harmless. Glory burst into laughter. Marie, Tina, and Lilly started laughing too. They all knew there was nothing harmless about Mak and his insulted expression was hilarious.

The other women lowered their staffs and gapped at Glory like she’d lost her mind. The appearance of a man after so many years didn’t stun them as much as seeing Glory laughing uncontrollably. They looked at each other in stunned confusion.

Mak scowled at his mate’s amusement at his expense. He was the fucking commander of some of the fiercest warriors in the universe and yet she told the women that he was harmless. I am so going to spank her ass for this and show her who’s harmless! He relaxed slightly when the women lowered their staffs and backed off. What kind of planet did these women come from? He could tell they were all trained as warriors. The fact that they’d managed to catch him off guard and surrounded him was impressive.

Glory finally got control of her laughter. “Alright everyone, let’s get into camp. We have some serious crap we have to talk about. Mak, the first thing we need to do is inject the nano-translators into the women’s ears so they can understand you. We wouldn’t want you getting poked full of holes by mistake. Stay close to me so I can make sure you make it into camp safely because we have traps set around the perimeter.
